The other day Hubs, the boys and I drove an hour north to my fathers home. Once there, we hopped in my dad’s truck, with his wife, and drove another ten minutes to the reserve. There, we were introduced to seven of the cutest puppies in the world. One by one Belinda took the pups out of their blanket lined home, and plopped them into our laps. They were five and four days old – the runt was born a full day after its siblings.
Hubs and I ohhhhhh’d and awwww’d as we saw each one. We both paused on a sweet girl who had four white paws but reddish black fur, but when this one was pulled out, the runt, I fell in love!
She was very vocal about being taken from her momma and plopped into some strangers arms, and she was So active that only four of the 58 photos I took of her were not blurry. Ideally, Hubs and I would have loved to look the pups over at about 4 weeks old before choosing, not four DAYS old, so that we could see what kind of temperament they had. We want one who is frisky and fierce, not scared of every little sound!
Unfortunately that choice was taken from us when Belinda announced that three of the females would be killed shortly after birth to ‘help” the mother dog. So hubs and I had to choose our pup based on looks, not temperament, which is rather sad.
The fact that the pup was vocal, and active helped us make the decision, but her coloring cinched the deal immediately. Both hubs and I did not even need to talk over which one we wanted, for both of us, we knew this pup was “The One”.
And yet, My step mother found it super odd that we were able to agree on which pup we would take without talking about it. She was shocked we were not arguing about this or that pup. The thing is, we have spent many, many nights up late, talking in our bed about the new puppy. We knew what we were looking for in the pup and we both know what we like in terms of physical appearance. To me, once that little black and white pup was brought out, the choice was made FOR us!
I mean, Come on! Just look at Smokey! How could we pass up the opportunity to get a Mini Me for her!!
